Hay que decirlo sin anestesia: el DJ tradicional, ese que se define a sí mismo como «el que sabe de música», ya no tiene un lugar sostenible en la radio moderna. Y no es una opinión pesimista ni una moda pasajera. Es una consecuencia directa de que su función principal (dar información y opinión sobre canciones y artistas) dejó de ser escasa. Y todo lo que deja de ser escaso, deja de tener valor de mercado.
Durante décadas, el DJ vivió cómodo en un rol muy claro: era el puente entre la música y el oyente. Él sabía qué sonaba, por qué sonaba, quién lo cantaba y qué significaba. Y ese es, quizás, el error estratégico más grande de la locución musical contemporánea: seguir compitiendo en un terreno donde ya no existe ninguna ventaja competitiva.

El problema de fondo no es la falta de talento. El problema es la comodidad. Es mucho más fácil seguir hablando de lo mismo de siempre (el lanzamiento de la semana, el chisme del artista, el «top 10» recalentado) que asumir el riesgo de construir una voz propia, con opiniones que puedan generar rechazo, cariño o debate real.
Esa comodidad es traicionera porque durante un tiempo sigue «funcionando»: el rating no cae de un día para otro, la audiencia no se va de golpe. Pero se va erosionando lentamente, como una costa golpeada por el mismo tipo de ola durante años. Y cuando el DJ se da cuenta de que perdió relevancia, ya perdió también el tiempo que tenía para reinventarse.
Es un fenómeno parecido al de ciertas empresas que fueron líderes de mercado y desaparecieron no porque hicieran algo mal de un día para otro, sino porque durante años ignoraron que el terreno bajo sus pies estaba cambiando. El DJ que hoy sigue viviendo del dato musical es, en cierto modo, ese tipo de empresa: cómoda, estable en apariencia, y completamente vulnerable por dentro.
«Yo sé de música» ya no es una ventaja, es una excusa
Aquí hay que ser directo: decir «yo sé de música» hoy no es un mérito, es casi una excusa para no hacer nada más. Cualquier persona con un teléfono sabe, en tres segundos, tanto o más que un DJ sobre el origen de una canción, el estado civil de un artista o el porqué de una letra.

La autocrítica que casi nadie quiere hacer
Muy pocos DJs se hacen esta pregunta con honestidad: si mañana me quitan el micrófono, ¿la gente me va a extrañar a mí, o va a extrañar simplemente tener algo de música de fondo?

Un DJ que se hace esta pregunta con seriedad, y no le gusta la respuesta, todavía tiene tiempo de cambiar el rumbo. El que evita la pregunta, simplemente está posponiendo el momento en el que la audiencia se la va a responder por él, dejando de sintonizarlo.

Hay una razón psicológica detrás de esta resistencia, y vale la pena nombrarla: dejar de ser «el que sabe de música» y convertirse en «un personaje con opinión propia» implica exposición. Opinar de música es relativamente seguro: rara vez alguien se ofende profundamente porque un DJ diga que tal canción es buena o mala. Pero opinar sobre la vida, sobre la actualidad, sobre lo que le importa realmente a la audiencia, implica un riesgo mucho mayor de generar rechazo o polemica.
Ese miedo al riesgo es comprensible, pero también es, paradójicamente, lo que está acelerando la irrelevancia de tantos locutores. Y cuando el catálogo se volvió gratuito, accesible y universal, ese DJ se quedó sin ninguna razón de peso para seguir siendo escuchado.
La música siempre va a sonar. Eso nunca ha estado en discusión. La pregunta incómoda que cada locutor musical debería hacerse hoy no es qué canción poner después, sino: si me quitan la música, ¿qué me queda para decir?
